Greetings from Mrs. Colbert

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  This is going to be an AMAZING year! Elkin Elementary enjoys a tradition of academic success and consistently works to improve teaching and student learning.  Our goal is for school to be a fun and valuable learning experience. We strive to offer an instructional environment that nurtures the development of the whole child.. Our staff is committed to providing a positive atmosphere that is conducive to learning.  We will provide a school climate as secure and orderly as possible, and a safe, clean facility for all children. It is our goal to ensure that all the children at Elkin Elementary achieve success. We will continue to focus on soft skills and manners that are sure to help our students reach success.  It is our expectation that children develop to their greatest potential, and feel happy and accepted. Character education, leadership development and civic responsibility are integral parts of our daily routine. With support from parents and the community we cannot fail in preparing our students to become responsible, productive citizens. As part of the learning team, you are always welcome, and I encourage you to visit, call or email when you have questions or concerns about your child’s learning experience.

While we continue our quest for academic excellence, we are excited to provide a district wide, STEAM/PBL initiative as a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) through Project/Problem Based Learning.  We believe this will provide the opportunity for our students to become more globally competitive and enhance the skills they need to compete for top universities, community/technical colleges and/or the workforce. The STEAM program provides hands-on classroom experience for students that align with our curriculum. Teachers will integrate a Project Based Learning (PBL) approach that will engage in designing problems.  This approach will encourage collaboration, analysis, problem solving, and computational thinking. At Elkin Elementary School, we strive to provide the best possible educational opportunities to each and every student. We make it our personal mission to see all students grow academically and reach their full potential. After all, “We Do No Less Than Our Best!”

Successful schools have parents who are committed to learning and deeply involved with their children's education. We ask all parents begin this school year by reading the information in this handbook with your children. Please also get logged on to the Parent Portal if you have not already done so. We also invite you to participate as a volunteer. To learn more about EES, please visit the Elkin Elementary website at https://ees.elkincityschools.org/ . You can also follow us on twitter @elkinelem, and on Facebook@Elkin Elementary. Your input is always welcome and my door is always open! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me anytime at school: (336)835 – 2756 cell: 336-452-0237, or email colbertp@elkin.k12.nc.us.
